In Daniel 9 he writes down a lengthy prayer of confession. What strikes me most about this prayer is that Daniel makes no distinction between himself and those who have sinned, have rebelled, have been wicked, have not listened to the prophets and have not sought the Lord. For Daniel (and Isaiah) just being counted among the sinful, is the same as being sinful yourself. This idea of communal sin is all but lost on our culture.
I would like to hear any thoughts on how we could encourage this attitude among Christians today.

We went to lunch with a youth ministry guru one time early in our marriage, who looked at me and Angie and said something to the effect that a husband's role in loving his wife like Christ loved the church was to bear her failings. I've thought about that a lot. I wonder if our role as ministers of reconciliation includes is viewing ourselves as bearing the brokenness that results from others' sin. Not just that we stand as sinners with them, but that we allow ourselves to be broken on their behalf. I don't know if that's good theology, but it might make for good personal reflection, or a point for community discernment about the sin in our contåext and, not only our complicity, but our opportunities to bear the burdens of both the suffering and the guilty.

I think that is not only good theology but great ecclesiology(sp). To share in Christ's sufferings as Christ takes on the sufferings of the world. To stand with the hurting without an air of accusation.
Too many times we half-way relate to sinners. We admit, "Yes, I have sinned...but not THAT BAD."
It has to be such a turn off to non Christians when we get a "You brought this on yourself" attitude.

Isaiah 53 says that this is outstanding theology. Read it thinking along these lines, especially verse 11, "After the suffering of his soul, he will see the light of life and be satisfied; by his knowledge my rightous servant will justify many and he will bear their iniquities."

I am also reminded of Blue Like Jazz when Miller and his friends set up a confession booth at Reed College, but instead of accepting confessions, they confessed their sins and shortcomings, and that of the whole church, to its visitors.
Perhaps instead of lashing out at the church's unfaithfulness, we were broken by it, we would be able to love closer to how Christ loved.
It would be much easier if everyone didn't try to play the blame game. I hear so much of that around here. Most of the time more effort is put into the arguement than would be nessicary to fix the problem. I think it all goes back to that famous scripture, "While we were still sinners, Christ died for us."
