I have often heard it said that many kids will act out in order to get attention...any kind of attention. They don't mind so much if they are hated, they just don't want to be ignored. I see it played out all the time in the teens at our church. Kids don't mind if they are the fat kid, or the dumb blond, or the nerd, in fact they are most often the ones who encourage the labels. It is difficult to create new niches for these kids where they can feel unique. I thought the villain on The Incredibles had a great point when he said, "If everyone is super, then no one will be." So how do you make a kid feel unique with out pointing out their oddities.
It is strange, though, that most Christians are content to meet the status quo with God. They don't want to be God's enemy, but they don't want to be a stand out follower either. I don't want to be content with blending in. I don't want God to see me as Luke warm. I want Him to look at me in the same way Jesus looked at the centurion and say about me, "I tell you the truth, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith."
Sorry, if this post is scatter-brained. I am juggling Jude and am having a hard time focusing my thoughts. I am writing this mainly so I can go back later and try to work through these thoughts in a coherent manner. Your thoughts will help.

I know in me apathy is my worst enemy in my ministry. I have gone through phases where it seemed everything was just floating by.
The only people who can really make you mad are people who you love, or who attack those you love. And anger is stirred because of love. If injustice doesn't make us angry, we are too apathetic.
I find that hate and love are closer to each other than any kind of indifference. How many times can people relationships start with an extreme dislike for each other that blossoms into a strong relationship? Or when a relationship breaks down, they move from love to hate. It happens in divorce all the time. Also, it seems that people who hate much (ex. Paul) when attacked with the love of Christ, become passionate lovers of people. People in the middle seem to not change much at all.
If Hitler had Christ, his effect on the world would have been tremendous.

I've seen your comments on the muddypuddles blog and I decided to check your blog! I immediately saw your comments on apathy. I agree that apathy is worse than hate. At least you have some hope if there are strong emotions whether they are love or hate. I've (unfortunately) been there! After years of neglect from my husband (now ex-husband), he finally agreed to go to counseling with me. The first thing the counselor asked me was, "How do you feel about him?" Well, I couldn't really say I loved him but I didn't hate him either. I just had no feelings for him anymore. I thought that would be better than not hating! However, we found that apathy is the hardest of all emotions to overcome. It was easier for me to just turn off all my feelings and not care anymore, than to keep caring and being hurt. When you don't care, you don't feel the pain as much! I try now to care more for everyone and to never get to the place I once was. Anyway, I enjoyed your comments, as well as those from bluecanary!
